About

Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and a researcher at NUPIT-UFPE. Michelle's research focuses on discovering novel pharmacological options for the treatment of emotional and cognitive disorders, as well as tumor processes.

Michelle completed her postdoctoral fellowship focusing on brain reward circuits at the McGovern Medical School (UTHealth) in Houston, USA, and earned her Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology in Magdeburg, Germany. She also holds a Master's degree in Biochemistry and a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from UFSM. Throughout her career, she has served as a Visiting Professor at Stanford University (USA) and at the DKFZ Institute in Heidelberg (Germany).

The anatomy of refusal

Anorexia nervosa is one of the most lethal psychiatric disorders—and yet, one of the least understood.

For a long time, this silence accompanied me. This book was born from the desire to break it.

As a neuroscientist and as a woman who has lived with this condition for over 25 years, I weave together memory, scientific evidence, and social reflection throughout these pages to deepen the understanding of what anorexia nervosa truly is. We explore its triggers, the factors that drive its development, and, above all, the mechanisms that sustain it over time.

But this book is not only about understanding the disorder. It is also about opening new paths forward.

I present coping strategies grounded in neuroscience and invite a necessary reflection on how everyday language, social media, and even science itself contribute to the construction—and maintenance—of distorted ideas about the body and health.

I wrote this work to challenge stigmas that still silence, delay diagnosis, and hinder access to care.

If you seek to understand what lies behind the disorder—within yourself, in someone you love, or in your professional practice—this book is for you.

Seminars

What to expect from our sessions?

As a neuroscientist, researcher, and professor, I believe that true progress in life—accompanied by emotional stability and growth—begins when we understand how our mind, brain, and body function. From this understanding, we can more clearly find practical tools to change behaviors, overcome challenges, and evolve consistently.
My life’s purpose is to build a journey with greater resilience—both for myself and for the people around me.
I want to help build lives where there is a genuine reason to be and feel anchored in the present moment. My goal is to bring smiles back to people's faces, give them reasons to wake up with energy, and help them finally experience peaceful, restorative nights of sleep.
More than just theory, in my lectures, I deliver practical tools for everyday life, validated by science, and designed to generate the transformation I propose.
These sessions are always open to dialogue. Listening is a fundamental part of emotional intelligence, and it is exactly where we create room for change.
Together, we will build our best versions, clarify our goals, discover what gets us out of bed every morning, and learn to be grateful for the now.

Who are these lectures for?

All sessions are strategically designed and tailored to the reality of the target audience, whether in the educational environment (schools, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels) or in the corporate world (employees, leadership, and executives).
The language and strategies adapt, but the commitment remains exactly the same: scientific rigor, applied neuroscience, and real tools to achieve our best results.

Theme 3: Anorexia Nervosa

In these lectures, we will address an eating disorder and mental health crisis that carries one of the highest mortality rates in psychiatry.

We will dive into the biology of the brain involved in anorexia nervosa. Together, we will debate different cases and clinical experiences, bringing to light and giving a voice to what is often left in the shadows and unheard.

We will explore the triggers, the early signs, and how the disorder is physically built within the brain.

We will also discuss the crucial role of the family, the social system, and the media in the development of the disease. Furthermore, we will look at how to cope with symptoms, practical tools for minimization, and how anorexia nervosa is deeply connected to habit formation, anxiety, depression, and overall mental health struggles.

Most importantly, we will try to answer the question: 'Why me?'. And crucially: 'Where do we go from here?’
